Woman Adopts Pit Bull After Rescuing It From Cage in the River

A 1-year-old abandoned pit bull that nearly drowned in a crate can thank this New Jersey woman for not only saving him but providing him a forever home.

Jenniffer Vaz, of Eatontown, New Jersey, has welcomed a new member into her family: River, the pup she found locked inside a cage, bobbing up and down in a river.

Last week, she was walking her other dog when she noticed a black wire cage in the water. That’s when she noticed the pup trapped inside the cage, at risk of drowning as the tide began to come in, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office wrote on Facebook. Realizing the water was rising rapidly, she climbed over the wall and rescued the pup, the post read.

“If not for the heroic rescue act of the good Samaritan, the dog could have potentially drowned,” authorities said.

The dog was brought to Monmouth County SPCA and was deemed to be in good condition.

Days later, Vaz brought him home and is now encouraging others to visit their local SPCA as many other canines and felines are in need of a loving home.

“He’s loved, safe and happy,” she wrote on Facebook.

Anyone with more information on River’s previous owners should contact the MCPO Animal Cruelty hotline or notify the Highlands Police Department.
